Leonel Messi in his recent interview discussed his season with Barcelona. He also gave his opinion on rumors liking the French striker Antoine Griezmann to join Messi from next season.
On being asked who should the Catalan Club sign, Messi claimed the ball is in the court of managing staff and he doesn’t have any say on the matter but would welcome the Atletico Madrid star.
“I’m not the person to decide that, it’s not my job. Last year was a great year, but it was a strange to lose the game against Roma.”
“Griezmann’s signing depends on the board and the coach. I can only say that to win the Champions League you have to have the best players and he is very good.”
“It would be brilliant if the club signs Griezmann, but as I said, I don’t know if he’s the priority. You need the best to win the Champions League… and Griezmann is.”
Real Madrid won the 3rd consecutive UEFA Champions League title. It did overshadow Barcelona’s season where they won 2 trophies: La Liga and Copa Del Rey. Messi believes that critics are right to blame Barcelona for poor performance in Champions League as Real Madrid won 4 in 5 last years whereas the Catalan club has just managed to win 5 in their entire history.
“Yes. The truth is we would like to have won more Champions League, above all in the last three years.”
“No. Winning La Liga and the Copa is really important. It’s not easy. Like I said, despite what happened in the Champions League.”
Messi’s teammate Jordi Alba recently claimed that everyone in Barcelona wishes that Real Madrid lose, Messi also made similar remarks in 2016 before the UCL Final when Real Madrid were to face their neighborhood rivals Atletico Madrid. Now the Barcelona man has changed his mind and is more focused on his own side.
“I want to win. I don’t care about the other teams. I’m a Barça player and I never want the main rival to win. But, first of all, and most importantly, I want to win myself.”
“Getting knocked out at that stage of the competition can’t happen to us, especially how it happened this time, with the first leg lead we had. That made the elimination even more painful and it was viewed as being even worse because of how it happened.”
Messi admits that he only watched the highlights of the Champions League Final in Kiev but it wasn’t because he did not wish to see it.
“Just bits, to be honest. Not because I didn’t want to, but because we were in Argentina and the time isn’t the same. I saw the highlights and everything major that happened.”
Though Real Madrid’s success may have overshadowed Barcelona’s double this season, Messi is happy with the achievements of the club and believes it was unfortunate that one of the three games they lost in the season cost them the dream of European glory.
“We had a great year with the double. It’s true that the Champions League excited everyone because of what it means to win it.
“But there’s no need to take anything away from what we have done. Winning La Liga and the Champions League are different things. Barça’s year was spectacular. We lost 3 games all season and unfortunately one of them knocked us out of the most exciting competition.”
Messi now is in Russia where he will captain his national side in the FIFA World Cup 2018 as Argentina kicks off their campaign against Iceland on 16th June 2018 at 3:00 PM CET.
