The Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has been critical towards the Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese has scored 4 goals in 2 games of the FIFA World Cup 2018. All the goals of Portugal NT in World Cup so far have been scored by their showbiz footballer, one being the famous hat-trick against Spain and the other being the winning goal against Morocco.
Though these stats and figures did impress the majority of pundits all around the globe especially when the arch-rival of the Portuguese star; Lionel Messi failed to carry Argentina against Iceland and Croatia. But one such person who is not impressed is former Barcelona man, Cesc Fabregas who wrote in his column on the BBC Sport website that Cristiano Ronaldo is being overhyped.
“Yes, he is playing well, but if you really look at what he has done, he has scored one penalty, one free-kick, one goal from a corner and one with a shot that David de Gea should have saved.”
The Spanish player who was left out of the FIFA World Cup 2018 squad, further criticised the reigning European champions for not playing ‘beautiful football’.
“You cannot say that he and Portugal have shown great combinations or tiki-taka football to score great goals.”
Portugal now have won 4 points in their last two games which is same as Spain thanks to the goalscoring ability of Cristiano Ronaldo. Cesc does give him credit but claims that the goals are not coming from free-play which might be an issue for the side in the upcoming games.
“You have to give him credit, of course, but his goals have come from set-pieces, penalties or mistakes.”
Portugal now will face Iran in 3 days’ time. If the side led by Cristiano Ronaldo manages to win or draw it would directly qualify them for the round of 16 along with Spain.
