Julen Lopetegui, the newly appointed coach of Real Madrid managed his debut game with the club and it wasn’t the result which would have been anticipated but the Spanish coach believes that the game had a lot of positives on which his side will dwell in the coming days.
The game ended 2-1 in the favor of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera were the goalscorers for the English side as Karim Benzema scored the only goal for the Spanish club. Julen Lopetegui is content with the performance of his side and is optimistic for future.
“The team had character and showed positives. There were no injuries and in general, the team had an acceptable game. There were things that made us happy and we move on. We all want to win all the time, but the key thing was not the result. In this preparation phase, we want to consolidate concepts.”
Real Madrid played their first match of pre-season against Manchester United whereas the English club played their 5th game. Lopetegui claims that his side produced decent stats keeping in mind the nature of the game and considering that this was their first game.
“For them, it was their fifth game and for us just our first. We handled the game well, they had two good shots on goal.”
Lopetegui continued and made a huge claim that he wishes to create a better team than before. Though he realizes the challenge is to be fulfilled without their ex-star player Cristiano Ronaldo who recently completed a move to Turin based club, Juventus.
“I am delighted with the team I have here. We have the challenge of reinventing the team without a player such as Cristiano Ronaldo. I want to make this team even better than before.”
Real Madrid now has a number of exciting young talents who are believed to be dominating the world football in the coming years. Julen Lopetegui has trained with these names in the past in the Spanish under 21 and the Spanish NT. Real Madrid has some mix of veterans like Bale, Benzema, Ramos, Marcelo, Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Modric, Kroos, etc. with the new talent such as Vinicius Jr, Asensio, Isco, Odriozola, Theo Hernandez, Vallejo, Lunin, Odegaard, Vazquez, etc.
“We have a squad chock full of excellent players, including Bale, and we want to have a good, united side. Vinicius played a good game. He has gone from less to more, just like the rest of the team. He started a little shy, but then he came on in leaps and bounds. He is very young and has to adapt to this style of football and what we ask of players. I thought he played a good game.”
Real Madrid despite having such vast squad density have been feeling the void created after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo which according to many fans should be fulfilled by another galactico signing. There have been several names attached to the club like Icardi, Hazard, Timo Werner, Rodrigo, Courtois etc. The only name which has been strongly linked is that of Belgian goalkeeper Courtois who played for England based club, Chelsea. Julen Lopetegui has refrained from commenting on the potential arrivals as he chose to value the serenity of his current squad.
“Courtois? At no time am I going to talk about players who are not at Real Madrid. I am thrilled with these goalkeepers that I have and I will not talk about players who are not part of this team.”
Julen Lopetegui has been confident about his side and many of the fans have faith in him but there is a section of Madridistas who fear the fate of Real Madrid under Lopetegui will be similar to that of Rafa Benitez who was sacked mid-season and then youth coach Zinedine Zidane was given the responsibility.
Lopetegui has previously worked with many of the current Real Madrid players and there has been a good chemistry between the coach and the players. The reports of compliance and acceptance have been following since his appointment which is a good start for the club.
Real Madrid will now play their second game of the preseason against Italian club Juventus on 5th of August 2018.
