Julen Lopetegui who earlier coached Porto and the national side of Spain made his official debut as the coach of Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup against Atletico Madrid. The match ended in a 4-2 (ET) loss for the European champions and Julen Lopetegui analyzed the game in his post-match conference. Lopetegui believes that his side started well but eventually fell short after conceding the equalizer.

“The match started well for them and in the first play they scored, which we didn’t expect, then the team managed to turn the game around, and for the most part we were better, but we couldn’t take advantage of that fact and they made good use of all the chances they had. Then, in the first part of the extra time, we had control and created more chances. They took their chances. After their third goal, we lost our style of play, but things like that happen.”

Julen Lopetegui has been given a responsibility which cannot be underestimated, he is building a team after the era of Cristiano Ronaldo which would invite loads of extreme reactions either way. If his side loses a game, the whole history of the club will be forgotten in order to hype Ronaldo’s presence. If his side wins a game, the whole contribution of Ronaldo will be slammed in comparison to the team effort.

Lopetegui believes that the game was lost when emotionally Real Madrid were taken aback after conceding the third goal.

“Football has good and bad days, you win or lose. In extra time we did well initially but the third goal hit us emotionally and we lost some order, and they then scored the fourth and that was it.”

Gareth Bale is the player who was bought with the pure intention to take over Real Madrid after Cristiano Ronaldo. The stage has arrived and Lopetegui claims the Welsh forward had a good game. Gareth also marked an assist in his name as Benzema converted his cross in the 27th minute of the game.

“Bale played well, but it is normal at this time of the season that players aren’t at their best physically. We are happy with his performance and are sure will play well in the forthcoming matches.”

Lopetegui continued to list out a number of negative points from the game which he has observed and looks forward to improvising on them before they start their La Liga campaign later this week.

“Negative points, losing was the worst thing, and we conceded four goals and we need to improve on that. At the start of extra time we started well and were playing better than they were, but they punished us because of a small error, and we became a bit more desperate to score, then the game went against us and we ended up losing.

Having lost the Super Cup we want to go on and win La Liga which we haven’t won for a few seasons, starting on Sunday. They are hungry for more, and there are details we want to fix.”

Lopetegui remained adamant about changing the tables around and working on every detail to lessen the probability of mistakes happening in future.

“We will work on everything, not just the small mistakes, but in every facet of the team. We don’t like making mistakes, but we need to improve on everything. I’m sad to have lost, and frustrated and it is normal to feel like that. Tomorrow we will have to wake up and prepare for the first La Liga game and get off on the right foot.”

Julen Lopetegui will have a limited time to improve his side as Real Madrid are known for being short-tempered and highly demanding. If they don’t get to see immediate results then there won’t be much of hesitation to make changes. Julen Lopetegui will now look forward to the first La Liga game for Real Madrid against Getafe which will take place in Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday at 22:15 CET.
