Real Madrid hosted their first LaLiga game at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and triumphed over Getafe with a comfortable win of 2-0. This is the first official victory of the club under Julen Lopetegui and in their era post-Cristiano Ronaldo. The coach expressed his joy over the win.
“I feel huge joy for having won. It’s the first league match, the competition that tells you how good a team really is. We’re happy and satisfied.”
Gareth Bale who usually opens the scoring for Real Madrid in the opening LaLiga games for past few seasons found the net yet again but it was the second strike of the game as the Spanish right-back Dani Carvajal scored the opener.
“I liked the team in general and Gareth played a great game. He gives us different solutions and we try to take advantage of them.”
Real Madrid have started to show the effects of Loptegui’s tactics as it recorded the most percentage of possession which has only been bettered twice since 2009. The stats show a record 78% possession donned by the Madrid side who earlier were identified with counter-attacking football. Julen Lopetegui believes his side has the right characteristics to execute such kind of play and hints that in days to come the fans will see the play devel more and more on this foundation.
“I put the focus on the team and I think that within the team structure that we want create, there are players with different characteristics. We’re delighted with that. We want to try to recover the ball always as soon as possible. The players made a great effort today. Today’s win is the first step in a very long league.”
The team was also seen distributing the ball swiftly with one touch passes to build the attack rapidly while playing hexagonal and vertical passes instead of standard horizontal passes of classic tiki-taka. Toni Kroos recorded 117 passes in 137 touches and his accuracy has been next to perfect as he missed only 1 pass in the whole game while having a 100% accuracy in the attacking half.
Julen Lopetegui further expressed that this was the desired start to LaLiga as it is the competition which tests continuity and consistency throughout the season. The coach also gave Dani Ceballos the vote of confidence who lacked playing time under the former coach Zinedine Zidane.
“Ceballos played a very interesting game, he has a lot of personality and he has to keep working, but he will help us for sure.”
Real Madrid now have a week to improvise further on their tactics and figure out their rotations as on Sunday, 26th October 2018 they will be facing Girona in Estadi Montilivi at 22:15 PM CET.
