The number 11 of Bayern Munchen earlier celebrated his assist to Kimmich in the first leg of the tie which had upset many supporters of his parent club Real Madrid.
James Rodriguez seemed to be emotional for returning back to Santiago Bernabeu and had admitted in the pre-match press conference that he won’t be celebrating if he scored against the club which nurtured him for 3 years.
The attacking midfielder did come to haunt his parent club and kept true to his word by not celebrating his goal which was last of the game in a 2-2 tie.
The gesture which made the Madrid fans applaud him wasn’t only about his respectful celebration but also when in the 83rd minute of the game Asensio tripped and got injured. The young Spanish sensation lay on the ground as Bayern seemed to take advantage of a man down and continued the play in pursuit of that one more goal which would have made them cruise into the finals. The 80 thousand Madridistas in the Bernabeu booed and whistled this unsportsmanlike gesture of Bayern.
The pass was made to James Rodriguez who was under no obligation to play the ball out but the Colombian international had respect for his former teammate who lay down and did not want to get an advantage in a such a manner. He kicked the ball over the sidelines to stop the play so that the injured Asensio can get the medical attention and Real Madrid don’t have to defend with a man down. The gesture made his current team furious but the class act was well acknowledged by the Madridistas.
The very next moment as he kicked the ball past the sidelines and play stopped for Asensio to be treated. James Rodriguez was subbed off for Javi Martinez in the 84th minute. As the ex-Real Madrid man walked off the pitch he was showered with the love of the Bernabeu fans as he too acknowledged them by responding to the round of applause.
The match ended 2-2 which made Real Madrid qualify on the aggregate score of 4-3. They will now play the winners of second semi-final in Kiev on 26th of May where the final is to be played.
The other two teams battling to reach the final are AS Roma and Liverpool who play the second leg of the tie tonight in Stadio Olimpico which is the home ground of AS Roma. Liverpool currently lead the tie with a 5-2 lead.
The second semi-final match will be telecasted all around the globe via official broadcasting partners. The kick-off will take place at 7:45 PM CET, on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018.
